Falling In.
There are some things in life happening naturally. They’re organic and they require very little effort. Some call this serendipity. Chaplaincy is one of those for me. Much like my former life as a Pastor, I never set out to be a Chaplain. I really didn’t understand what Chaplaincy was about and I thought Chaplains only served in hospitals and the military. Boy, was I naive!
it was in April of 2014 when my wife, Kris, received a text from our neighbor, Lisa. Her husband was a volunteer firefighter in our township. Now, for years, Kris and I had been praying about how we could be more active in our community. I’m a very firm believer that everyone needs to play a volunteer part, especially Pastors. Various ideas came to mind, but nothing seemed to fit. Little to our knowledge, the fire department was looking for a Chaplain. Lisa’s husband, Emilio, made her contact my wife - apparently not wanting to be rejected - to ask if I would consider. When i heard the offer my eyes lit up. “What do you think?” I asked Kris. “Absolutely! It sounds just like what we’ve been praying for!” And so, much to Emilio’s surprise, I accepted.
I had no clue as to what I was getting myself into, but I’m constantly grateful I said, “yes!”
This blog is about my adventures with PMFD27 and subsequently PPD. The intent is to give insight to other Chaplains and departments as to how a Chaplain can be effectively utilized for the betterment of Fire and Police personnel and the community at large. Stay tuned, we’re just getting warmed up!
