De-mystifying Critical Incident Stress Management - 1.5 hours

As first responders are increasingly exposed to critical incidents, their effective care and support is essential. Critical incident stress management (CISM) is a crisis intervention method designed to provide support for those who have experienced traumatic events. CISM is comprised of multiple crisis components addressing phases of a crisis event. Since its formal inception in 1989, CISM has taken some criticism both in its effectiveness and delivery. This has caused some first responders to not participate in potentially helpful programs.

This 1.5 hour course provides participants an overview of the CISM history, approach, and delivery. Participants will learn how each CISM component is best implemented while providing foundational data and research supporting the effectiveness of CISM, when properly delivered. The overall goal of this course is to help participants better understand CISM, how to better evaluate the delivery of CISM components in order to help them utilize CISM services after experiencing a traumatic event.

This is not an ICISF official course nor will students received credit for any official training in CISM or from ICISF. This course is to help first responders better understand CISM services so they will be more willing to utilize CISM services for personal wellbeing and incident recovery. De-mystifying attempts to education participants to the effectiveness of properly presented CISM programs. (This course has been approved by the PA DOH for 1.5 Other Con ed credit hours.)
